Hello Everyone,
Following suit. I first was exposed to the shakuhachi ten years
ago while teaching at a music camp in Sweden, Maine (I am presently a
full time jazz bassist in the D.C. area) and consequently forgot about
it. Beginning my Masters degree in Ethnomusicology this past year, I
was eager to take the sting out of academia and decided to learn a new
instrument. In October of 1996, I began shakuhachi study with an
excellent Tozan player in the area, Soshu Mizuno and have been
practicing up a storm. If all goes well, I may find myself in Japan in
a year or two.........will keep you posted.
Currently, I'm playing two wonderful flutes ( 1.8 and roku) lent to me
by my teacher(which he is allowing me to purchase). The longer was
used when my teacher competed in the national competition and
originally belonged to his master!
Happy Blowing,
Adam Friedman
