Hi everybody,
In case you don’t know me, I’m Cynthia Nyoen Chaffee, one of Ronnie
Nyogetsu Seldin’s jun shi han students. If you do know me, hi again. I got
your email address from one of Ronnie’s emails to me. “Jitsu wa”, together
with Barbara Ruch of Columbia University’s Institute for Medieval Japanese
Studies, I would like to set up an ongoing Japanese culture series (possibly
with the cooperation of other departments) using the facilities at the
Institute (on the ColumbiaUniversity campus).
There two events already planned this fall. In October, a
presentation-workshop featuring two koto-shamisen players who will come from
Ichinomiya, Japan to speak about tegotomono and to play with workshop
participants. They will speak about ways they approach this music and will
demonstrate such pieces as Shintakasago, Yugao, Chidori, Midare, and perhaps
the danmono Rokudan. Later in the week they will present a concert of
various kinds of Japanese chamber pieces including Yaegoromo.
For November, a biwa demonstration-concert will be given by a noted
Japanese biwa teacher and performer.
I would like to give your name and email address to the Columbia
University Institute for Medieval Japanese Studies so they can send you
information about these and other similar events, but I feel I need your OK
before I do that. If you would like to receive flyers by (snail) mail, please
send me your home address too. OR.... let me know if you would rather not
have me divulge your email address. I’d like to hear from you as soon as
possible.
Cynthia
