The Dana Reason/Philip Gelb duet will be touring the east coast and Midwest
United States in late March, Early April, 2000 performing new music for
piano and shakuhachi. Compositions by Reason, Gelb along with John Cage and
Pauline Oliveros and others will be featured. The duet has performed
together for over 12 years, is featured on several recordings and has
appeared at the Opus 415 festival, Knitting Factory, Music Gallery,
Beanbenders, Center For New Music and Audio Technology, Deep Listening
Space.

Canadian born pianist and composer Dana Reason currently lives in San
Diego, California where she is pursuing a Ph.D in the Critical
Studies/Experimental Practices Music Program at the University of
California, San Diego. Ms. Reason has performed throughout the U.S.,
Europe, and Canada. Recent appearances have included the Guelph Jazz
Festival, the Banff Center for the Arts, FrauMusica (nova) Festival in
Cologne, San Francisco Jazz Festival, the Knitting Factory (New York), the
Music Gallery (Toronto), Deep Listening Gallery (New York), and the Sound
Symposium (Newfoundland). She has recorded for Music and Arts, Deep
Listening, Red Toucan, Ryokan and Sparkling Beatnik records and has been
featured on National Public Radio, CBC, and Radio Canada. Ms. Reason
studied piano with Boaz Sharon, Louie-Phillipe Peltier, Julie Steinberg and
Aleck Karis at the University of Florida, McGill University, Mills College,
and the University of California, San Diego.She has studied composition and
improvisation with: Alvin Curran, Pauline Oliveros, Alcides Lanza, Glenn
Spearman, and George Lewis. Subsequently, she participated in master
classes with Frederic Rzewski, and Leslie Bassett.

Philip Gelb is one of the few shakuhachi players who concentrates on new
music as well as being well versed in traditional shakuhachi music. His
shakuhachi teachers include Kurahashi Yoshio, Ronnie Seldin and Dale Olsen
and he studied composition with Yuji Takahashi. While a graduate student in
Ethnomusicology at the Florida State University School of Music, he founded
and directed the New World Ensemble. He has performed throughout North
America and in Europe and Japan. He has recorded for Deep Listening, Leo,
New World/Countercurrents, Ryokan, Abray, Sparkling Beatnik, Cultural
Labyrinth and Limited Sedition. Recently he has been soloist with the
Seattle Creative Orchestra, invited guest at the World Shakuhachi Festival
and featured at the Opus 415 festival. He is currently living and teaching
in the SanFrancisco Bay Area where he curates the Meridian Music Series at
Meridian Gallery.
