Hi Bud...
You picked a great guitar to start with! The Santa Fe's are exceptionally beautiful, sound great, and play very well. My local teacher, Mary Lu, just recommended the Zen Guitar book to me. I've been a 6-stringist for some 30+ years now, and I am excited to get the book myself and see if it brings a newness. After picking up the shakuhachi, I've been neglecting them somewhat lately! I think Phil would be honored (and probably knew) that a great legacy from his writings may continue for a very, very long time, directly and indirectly.
Down the road, you might find a little fun in "open tuning" your Takamine to a "D" (and other obscure alternate tunings), setting it ever-so-carefully on the floor, and playing a shakuhachi around a foot-strummed backdrop. (hint: washing the feet first is a good thing... :). Yes, I have done this, and it was...well...fun. Haven't been able to work in the other foot yet though... I keep falling over when I try it. Well, enough of that!!!
My warmest blessings on the new-found instrument!
Happy things,
dvc

Subject: RE: Zen Guitar, THANKS!
This is one of those strange synchronicities, as I was feeling the need to
sing and play the guitar, and have a guitar (a Takamine Santa Fe from a pawn
shop in Nashville) being shipped to me as we "speak"... I was wondering
where to begin, and this site will be my place to begin...
My koan is: how to put the country into country music? Perhaps inspired by
the shakuhachi and my long love of bluegrass and now country music... (how
did the shakuhachi bring me here? long story, I'll spare you, but it has to
do with being a "zen cowboy"), I'd like to learn to sing and play as part of
a healing relationship with the wounded earth... to sing and play as the
brook babbles or the blackbird sings... speaking of babbling, this is way
off topic, so I'll shut up for now... but wish me luck... and thanks for the
link! My condolences to all effected by the death of Phil Sudo, may his
spirit and teachings live on... I bow at his feet...
peace and love,
