Greetings from Vancouver, Canada!
I want to thank all those so far for registering for the Vancouver
Shakuhachi Fesival. We look forward to a wonderful gathering of
shakuhachi enthusiasts this November 14, 15, 16, 2003. For those still
interested in attending, please register soon as space is limited. If
it hasn't been mentioned before, we are pleased to have two
accomplished koto players joining us from Japan: Megumi Kakizakai and
Tomoko Kimura. In addition there will be interdisciplinary workshops
with the music department of UBC, specifically from the flute and
clarinet schools where there will be discussion on the effect that
honkyoku has had on modern music. As an example, the work of modern
Japanese composers such as Fukushima and Takemitsu will be discussed.
Other highlights in our schedule: Dr. Norman Stanfield will give a
lecture/demonstration about Komuso attire and lifestyle and will offer
a session of zazen for those interested in learning more about that
practice. A student open-mic performance is scheduled for the Saturday
evening festivities; Alcvin Ramos will be giving a basic demonstration
on the construction of hocchiku, and of course private lessons with
the visiting sensei will also be available. And please don't miss the
grand finale of the Masters Concert on the final night (which we hope
to get web-casted)! The weekend will also hold various surprises so
please come and join us for this special celebration of bamboo, breath,
mind, and music!
