I was talking to my teacher this morning. He just returned from
Tokyo and told me that the Tokiwa Gakki (sp?) shakuhachi store in
Ueno is closing. For those who never had the opportunity to visit
the place, the proprietor had what seemed to be the world's largest
selection of shakuhachi (and other traditional) notation. The shop
was about 20 feet deep (about an 18 mat room) and one whole wall
was floor to ceiling, end to end bookcases of notation. Masa said
that they had been in business there for more than 40 years.
They plan to retire and close the shop after the first of the year.
Always a favorite stop of mine when in town.
bj
p.s. I know that, for many, the proprietor was not percieved as
particularly friendly, but he was always helpful and I'll miss the
place.
