Subject: [Shaku] Shakuhachi Survey

=20

Hi everyone,=20

=20

I have been asked to participate to a special issue of the German
ethnomusicological journal =AB The World of Music =BB on the following topic:
the interest of Westerners in regard to non Western music. As you are surel=
y
guessing, my paper will be on Japanese music, and especially on the
shakuhachi, since it is the most popular Japanese instrument. I will also b=
e
including something on koto, taiko, shamisen, biwa, gagaku and shigin.

=20

I would like to be able to give an indication of the number of people
learning the shakuhachi world wide, including the number of people having
their shihan, etc. I would sincerely appreciate if everyone could fill up
the survey below. I made it very short. It should take you less than 5
minutes to fill up. But the validity of the results will obviously depend o=
n
everyone=B9s willingness and kindness to participate. I think that the result=
s
should be of interest to all of you. Please fill it up. Later, I will
publish the results on the list.

=20

I sincerely hope everyone on the list will participate, though a good numbe=
r
of people unfortunately left the list in the past few years. I will have to
contact them directly. I would also sincerely appreciate, if you know of
shakuhachi players who are not on the list, that you relay this survey to
them. I am aware that I will not be able to get an accurate number. The
larger the number of people answering, the most pertinent the estimate will
be.=20

=20

Also, this survey is strictly confidential. No name will appear unless
otherwise agreed, except possibly at the end of the article as thanks
(though I might not put everyone's name since I will be contacting more tha=
n
300 people). You do not have to answer the first question by putting your
name. I will possibly contact some of you for a more private interview.

=20

My most sincere thanks for your participation. It is for a good cause.
