I also start with #1 because I find that bamboo bores
differ and as a result, the formula for hole placement
does not work perfectly. I adjust the spacing by how
well each note is going as it's drilled.

That's probably a result of good aspect ratio. As Ken
pointed out, I also do not notice a difference in
sound from a curved or straight root. However,
strangely enough, the shape of the bamboo does
influence my posture when playing.
