An observation on mathmatical formulas on establishing hole spacing
on shakuhachi:
Last Fall I was looking for a hassun, and Peter Hill had (has) a Muira
Ryuho for sale at reibo.org, so I had him send it down. It was a really
great flute, but the distance between #3 and #4 was wider than usual
for a 1.8 - about the same distance as my 2.0. I'm not talking a few
millimeters here, that's roughly the diameter of a hole lower.
As with all of Muira's flutes, it plays perfectly in tune.
Because I have another hassun that I play, and I didn't want to deal
with the differences between the two, I sent the flute back.
Peter spent some time in Muira's shop in December. When he was here
last week he told me that *all* Muira's 1.8s have that spacing.
go (re)figure,
