I also received my shakuhachi as a gift, and frome some body that I dont't
know... I'ts a curious story, to be told some other day.
I'm a flutist too, and started to practise shakuhachi listening to records
and with the only help of John Kaizan Neptune's little book. At the
beginning I found the most difficult to keep an steady sound. It seemed to
me that the shakuhachi "wanted" to sound or not, depending of the day or on
its own mood (sometimes it still happens). I've never had a teacher, I think
it's difficult to find one here in Madrid, Spain (does anybody know?).
Anyway, I play some japanese folk pieces, improvisations, even some
plainchant, and over all, I try to get the spirit.
Enjoy it!
Alfredo.

Dear list,
I received a shakuhachi as a gift and have no idea how to start. I have
fingering charts and started with that. Has anyone learned by self study? If
so how does one go about it? I can make a sound but inthe dark regarding
exercises and stuff. I play flute. Do the flute exercises apply to the
shakuhachi too? Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks
