WSS Shakuhachi Summer Camp

From: Bruce Jones (bjones@weber.ucsd.edu)
Date: Fri Feb 04 2000 - 15:47:07 PST

Copied from a message originally sent to Phil Gelb, and, I think,
of interest to you folks: (apologies to those of you on the sfbay
shakuhachi list, who've already seen this - bj)

Now that we've all survived the passage into the new millenium and
are breathing easily in Sigh..-2K, were looking ahead with much
excitement to the 2nd Annual Shakuhachi Summer Camp of the Rockies. As
you probably recall, the idea of an annual summer camp arose in
response to the expressed interest of participants at World Shakuhachi
Festival 98 to have a smaller, more intimate, regularly-occuring
gathering of shakuhachi enthusiasts. Last summer we were able to offer
the inaugural summer camp, giving participants the opportunity to study
intensively with Riley Lee and Yoshio Kurahashi. Michael Gould and
David Wheeler also helped out at last years camp as well. The camp was
a resounding success and and we all had a great time! We are very
excited to again be hosting Riley and Yoshio this year as well as
having Michael Gould , David Wheeler and Yoko Hiraoka (koto/shamisen)
on faculty.

The location for the Shakuhachi Summer Camp of the Rockies will
again be the beautiful Sunrise Ranch, a residential spiritual community
on 400 acres just west of Loveland, Colorado. The setting is just
beautiful, very relaxing and a wonderful spot for a retreat. The food
is excellent, theres a good performance space, lodging is comfortable
including a pool and tennis court, and everyone really enjoyed the
experience there last summer!

This year we are trying to get the word out earlier about the
summer camp in the hopes of having better enrollment. We plan to
contact electronically as many perspective participants as possible. To
that end, we would greatly appreciate it if you would forward us
whatever Email address list you have in regards to shakuhachi
enthusiasts in your local area. This will also help to update the Email
address list of the World Shakuhachi Society as we are getting close to
mailing out our first official communication

The World Shakuhachi Society (which is still in the formulation
stage in terms of establishing 501c(3) status) is sponsoring the summer
camp and is not in a position to lose $ on it. Hence we are contacting
teachers of Shakuhachi such as yourself in the hopes that you will
really encourage your students to attend this years summer camp. It
would be wonderful if you could organize a group of your students and
come with them to the camp. We hope momentum for this event builds
over the years so that it really becomes peoples priority and the
REALLY MUST-DO shakuhachi event of the year!

Our intent for the summer camp was always that besides being a
opportunity for developing players to receive supurlative teaching, it
was also just a forum for all of us to get a chance to get togeather
more regularly and hang out and have agood time. Of course, wed love to
be in a position to pay more teachers to participate or give more
significant discounts on registration fees but the fledgling World
Shakuhachi Society (WSS) is not yet financially stong enough to do
that. Over time however, wed like to be able to do this much more!! One
way to foster this growth and help the developement of the WSS is to
participate in the summer camp annually thereby making the WSS stronger
financially which will allow us as a society to support professional
teachers more in these types of areas. With all that in mind, we hope
to see you and many others out here in Colorado this June. So come on!
Lets see a few more of you guys out here this year,! kick our shoes off
, do some playing and have a good get down!

Thanks in advance for your support. Hopefully these efforts will
help all of us bring more shakuhachi to more folks over the years of
this 21st century.

    Sincerely,

Organizing Committe for the 2nd Annual Shakuhachi Summer Camp of the
Rockies

A Few Quotes From Last Years Camp

"A truly inspiring event, the intensty of the camp pushed my level of
ability to improve more in those few days then in the 2 years since I
began playing, and made a remarkable difference on how I continue to
learn"

"Beyond the lessons themselves, it was really special to have an
extended period of time in a small group setting with these wonderful
teachers to just hang out and get to know them as individuals."

"There is nothing like a week-long intestive with fine teachers to
encourage and inspire shakuhachi students, even rank beginners like me.
The real payoff comes after you get home and realize just how much you
learned!"
