Watazumi-Do was more than a crazy monk. The instruments he played were not
comtemporary shakuhachi, but rough hewn flutes known as hocciku. Just bored
out, finger holes punched somewhere close, utaguchi filed, and played. One of
the selections on an album depicting his music was played on a hocciku made by
a 14 year old boy out of a bamboo prop for a clothes line! He was known for
playing outlandishly large and difficult flutes.

If you have read his dicertation given to shakuhachi players here in the US
in the 1980's (I believe, could be wrong!), he gives his philosophy of
playing. Very interesting reading. Very aggressive flute player. One of the
selections he played actually shattered the flute during the performance.

Watazumi's sound is like calamari, you have to develope a taste for it. I
play hocciku, as well as contemporary shakuhachi, and the difference is
apparent, as the difficulty, at least for me.
