So what do we think of the Yuu?
A few points:
In general this list is a terrible forum to discuss the merits of various
shakuhahci, their makers and their sellers.
Many people who earn their living by making and/or selling shakuhachi
subscribe to this list, and I think many people are, rightfully, a bit
uncomfortable making public comments that might impact the livliehood of
others.
Secondly, and I think this is even more important, what one person may find
to be the perfect shakuahchi, someone else may find to be a worthless peice
of wood (or plastic.) There is just so much subjectivity on the quality and
value of a type of shakuhachi that just asking for a general opinion from a
large group of people about a particular type is really, in my opinion, a
thankless task.
And this is due to many variables: people's skill level, the sensitivity of
their ears, their income, their aesthetic sensibilities, the reason why they
play shakuhachi at all, their artisitic aspirations, and so on...
Thirdly, from someone who has been playing for just a few years, I can say
that my opinion on what is a good and financially worthwhile shakuhachi has
changed drastically every year I have been playing. And, in retrospect, I
do not think I was ever wrong. Different appoaches suited me fine at
different times. I'm sure next year I will have another opinion on the
matter.
So, in conclusion: if you want a meaningful opinion about the Yuu, or about
any other type of shakuhachi, get your hands and lips on one and give it a
try.
