I think the practices of Komus=F4 are being thrown around in this=20
discussion without much basis in fact. Some Komus=F4 may well have been=20=

deeply spiritual and "enlightened," with only the good of all sentient=20=

beings on their minds as they went their rounds in medieval and early=20
modern Japan. There are plenty of documents, however, to show that=20
many other Komus=F4 were thugs who extorted offerings from their=20
""patrons." It obscures the point of the discussion when we idealize=20
shakuhachi players from the past in an effort to bolster our arguments=20=

about teaching and learning. If those arguments are solid, they don't=20=

need imaginary figures from the past to make sense.
